2027 Season US AIME Rules Reshaped! What Changes Have Occurred to the AIME Qualification Threshold?

With the approach of the 2027 season, the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) has implemented a historic rule reshaping of the AMC/AIME competition system. From the fixation of the qualification threshold, the complete restructuring of the USAMO qualification logic, to a comprehensive upgrade of the exam format, these changes not only alter the preparation path for US-based students but also impose new requirements on the academic planning of Chinese students.

I. Three Core Changes to US AIME Rules: A Complete Overhaul

1. Fixed Qualification Threshold, Farewell to "Floating Cutoff Scores"

Previously, AIME qualification was determined dynamically based on the percentile scores of AMC test-takers in a given year. Starting from the 2027 season, the AIME qualification threshold will be changed to fixed numerical scores: a score of 100 on the AMC 10 or 85 on the AMC 12 will guarantee qualification. This adjustment makes the qualification standard more transparent and stable, allowing students to set clear target scores in advance. However, it also means that qualification standards will no longer be lowered due to a particularly difficult exam paper or weaker overall performance. The margin for error in the AMC has become thinner, and every point is crucial.

2. USAMO Qualification Logic Restructured, AIME Weighting Takes the Lead

In the past, the qualification formula for USAMO/USAJMO was "AMC score + 20 × AIME score," with the AIME score already accounting for two-thirds of the total. Starting from the 2027 season, the AMC score will no longer be used as a basis for qualification. Qualification for USAMO/USAJMO will depend entirely and primarily on the AIME score. This means that the previous strategy of relying on a high AMC score to boost the total and compensate for weaknesses in the AIME has been completely blocked. The 15 questions of the AIME have become the true "decisive battleground."

3. New Age Restrictions and Computer-Based Testing at Test Centers

Starting from the 2027 season, only students who have reached the age of 13 are eligible to take the AIME. Even if younger students meet the AMC qualification threshold, they will not be able to participate if they are under 13. Additionally, all test-takers in the US and Canada must go to Pearson Professional Centers for computer-based testing. There will no longer be a distinction between AIME I and AIME II; all exams will be administered during a unified window from February 5 to 6.

II. Preparation Window for the China Region: A "Golden Opportunity" Brought by the Fixed Cutoff

Although the rules in the US have undergone major changes, for students in the China region, the 2027 season AMC presents a rare golden window for qualification. This year, the AIME qualification threshold has been favorably lowered: a score of 100 on the AMC 10 or 85 on the AMC 12 will unlock an invitation to the AIME. This is an excellent opportunity in recent years to win awards and qualify. Students should make full use of the less than three months of preparation time, precisely target the fixed cutoffs, and set clear AMC scoring goals.

III. Competition Selection Strategy: AMC 10 and AMC 12 Are Parallel Tracks, Not Prerequisites

Many parents and students have a misconception that AMC 10 and AMC 12 are in a progression relationship. In fact, they are two parallel tracks. As long as grade and age conditions are met, students can even register for a combination such as AMC 10 A卷 + AMC 12 B卷 in the same year. For 10th-grade students, both are options; however, 11th grade and above can only register for AMC 12. The choice of competition should not be based on盲目 pursuit of higher difficulty, but on the student's grade and current math level:

  • 1. Still building a foundation → Prioritize AMC 10
If the student is currently in grades 8–10, is just beginning to engage with competitions, and has an incomplete knowledge system, AMC 10 is the best starting point. At this stage, the most important thing is to build a knowledge structure and ensure stable scores on the basic and intermediate questions. Jumping directly to AMC 12 may lead to difficulties in understanding and keeping up due to knowledge gaps, which can cause a loss of confidence.
  • 2. Stuck at a bottleneck → Consider switching to AMC 12
For students who have been preparing for a while but whose AMC 10 scores consistently fluctuate around the 12–16 correct answer range, trying AMC 12 can be an option. Improving scores on AMC 10 requires overcoming the last few extremely difficult questions, which demands a significant amount of time and ability. By switching to AMC 12, students may find it easier to see results by relying on more consistent performance to hit the 85-point qualification cutoff.
  • 3. Clear goal for results → Directly aim for AMC 12
If the student's goal is very clear, i.e., to qualify for AIME as soon as possible and obtain competition results, then prioritizing the AMC 12 path is recommended. In essence, AMC 10 tends to "screen for top-tier talents," while AMC 12 tends to "provide opportunities to meet the standard." With equivalent ability, AMC 12 relies less on extremely difficult problems, offers a higher margin for error, and has a significantly higher qualification rate (top 5% globally) compared to AMC 10 (top 2.5% globally).
