With the approach of the 2027 season, the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) has implemented a historic restructuring of the AMC/AIME competition system. From the standardization of qualification thresholds, to the complete overhaul of USAMO qualification logic, and the comprehensive upgrade of exam formats, these changes not only reshape the preparation strategies for U.S.-based students but also introduce new considerations for Chinese students’ academic planning.
I. Three Core Changes in U.S.-Region AIME: A Complete Rule Overhaul
1. Fixed Qualification Thresholds – Farewell to “Floating Cutoffs”
Previously, AIME qualification was determined dynamically based on the percentile scores of AMC participants in a given year. Starting in the 2027 season, the AIME qualification threshold will be changed to fixed numerical scores: AMC 10 requires a score of 100, and AMC 12 requires a score of 85 to qualify. This adjustment makes the qualification standard more transparent and stable, allowing students to set target scores in advance. However, it also means that qualification standards will no longer be lowered due to particularly difficult exams or weaker overall performance. The margin for error in AMC has narrowed, and every point counts.
2. Restructured USAMO Qualification Logic – AIME Weight Takes the Lead
In the past, the qualification formula for USAMO/USAJMO was “AMC score + 20 × AIME score,” with AIME already accounting for two-thirds of the weight. Starting in the 2027 season, AMC scores will no longer be used as a basis for qualification. USAMO/USAJMO qualification will be determined primarily by AIME scores. This means that the previous strategy of relying on a high AMC score to boost the total and compensate for a weaker AIME performance is no longer viable. The 15 problems of the AIME have become the true “decisive battlefield.”
3. New Age Requirement and In-Person Computer-Based Testing
Starting in the 2027 season, only students who have reached the age of 13 are eligible to take the AIME. Even if younger students meet the AMC qualification threshold, they will not be allowed to participate if they are under 13. In addition, all test-takers in the U.S. and Canada must take the exam in person at a Pearson Professional Center. The distinction between AIME I and AIME II will no longer exist, and all exams will be administered within the window of February 5–6.
II. Preparation Window for the China Region: A “Golden Opportunity” with Fixed Cutoffs
While the U.S. region faces major rule changes, the 2027 season presents a rare golden qualification window for students in the China region. This year, the AIME qualification threshold has been favorably lowered: AMC 10 requires 100 points and AMC 12 requires 85 points to unlock the AIME invitation. This is an excellent opportunity for awards and qualification in recent years. Students should make the most of the less-than-three-month preparation period, precisely target the fixed score thresholds, and set clear AMC score goals.
III. Competition Selection Strategy: AMC 10 and AMC 12 Are Parallel Tracks, Not Progressive Levels
Many parents and students mistakenly believe that AMC 10 and AMC 12 are progressive levels. In fact, they are two parallel tracks. As long as grade and age requirements are met, students can even take a combination of AMC 10 A and AMC 12 B in the same year. For 10th graders, both are options; however, 11th graders and above are only eligible for AMC 12. Selection should not blindly pursue higher difficulty but should be based on the child’s grade and current math level:
- Still building a foundation → Prioritize AMC 10
If the child is in grades 8–10, is new to competitions, and has an incomplete knowledge framework, AMC 10 is the best starting point. At this stage, the most important thing is to build a solid knowledge structure and ensure stable scores on the mid-level foundational questions. Jumping directly to AMC 12 may lead to confusion and loss of confidence due to knowledge gaps. - Stuck at a plateau → Consider switching to AMC 12
For students who have been preparing for a while but consistently fluctuate around 12–16 correct answers on AMC 10, it may be worth trying AMC 12. Improving AMC 10 scores requires conquering the final few extremely difficult problems, which demands significant time and ability. Switching to AMC 12, with its more stable performance, often makes it easier to reach the 85-point qualification threshold. - Clear goal for results → Aim directly for AMC 12
If the child has a clear goal—to qualify for AIME and obtain competition results as soon as possible—then prioritizing the AMC 12 path is advisable. In essence, AMC 10 tends to “filter for top-tier talent,” while AMC 12 tends to “offer a pathway to meet the standard.” At the same ability level, AMC 12 relies less on extremely difficult problems, offers a higher margin for error, and has a significantly higher qualification rate (top 5% globally) compared to AMC 10 (top 2.5% globally).
