Geometric patterns representing sequence and series reasoning in AMC 10 algebra

How Difficult Is the AMC10 Math Competition? Can Average Students Also Win Awards? Why Can't You "Cram at the Last Minute"?

Many parents, upon hearing that AMC10 is an international math competition that requires advanced learning, immediately assume that "the difficulty must be ridiculously high, and my average child simply cannot handle it." But that's actually not the case—AMC10 is far less intimidating than imagined, but it is by no means an opponent to be taken lightly.

I. Breaking the Misconception: Where Does the Difficulty of AMC10 Lie?

First, let's be clear: AMC10 does not involve any advanced mathematics content at all. All test topics fall within the scope of the domestic junior high school mathematics curriculum.

It does not test calculus, linear algebra, or even much of the high school elective content. So where does its "difficulty" actually lie?

The real challenge is that the problem-solving approach is completely different from school exams. School math problems mostly test the direct application of formulas—practice them a few times, and students can calculate the answer with their eyes closed. But AMC10 problems are much more flexible, especially the later ones, which combine knowledge points from several modules together, hide quite a few traps, and truly test students' logical reasoning abilities and quick problem-solving thinking.

Moreover, the entire AMC10 paper consists of 25 questions, with only 75 minutes to complete them—an average of just 3 minutes per question. This is a considerable test of both speed and accuracy—not just "whether you can solve it," but "whether you can solve it quickly and accurately."

II. The 2026 Season Is Approaching Fast—Summer Is the Last Golden Window

The exam dates for the 2026 AMC10 season have been set:

Test A: November 5, 2026 (Thursday) 17:00–18:15

Test B: November 13, 2026 (Friday) 17:00–18:15

Registration deadlines: Test A: October 26; Test B: November 3

With less than 5 months until the exam, summer is the only golden preparation period of the year with no academic distractions, allowing for focused intensive training. If you're still hesitating and thinking "let's wait until school starts," it may already be too late.

III. Why Can't You "Cram at the Last Minute"? Three Realities Tell You Why

① Skyrocketing Number of Participants, Cutoff Scores Continue to Rise

The number of AMC10 participants in the China region has grown from 2,000 in 2007 to over 50,000 today—a 25-fold increase in 16 years—and is still growing at an annual rate of 20%–25%. In 2025, the AIME qualifying cutoff for Test A soared to 105 points (↑3 points), and Test B to 99 points (↑12 points); the global top 1% (DHR) remained stable at 130+ points. Competition in 2026 will only become more intense; short-term cramming has long since ceased to work.

② Vast and Complex Knowledge System—Four Modules Require Systematic Building

AMC10 covers four major modules: Algebra (35%–40%), Geometry (25%–30%), Number Theory (20%–25%), and Combinatorics (10%–15%). Among these, number theory and combinatorics are the areas most easily overlooked in domestic school mathematics, yet they account for a significant proportion of AMC10.

A harsh reality is that students who score full marks in school math may only be able to correctly answer the first 15 questions of AMC10 without systematic training. Summer is the only time for immersive, topic-specific preparation—miss it, and you'll have to wait another year.

③ Limited In-Person Test Seats—Securing a Spot Means Securing Your Chance

The 2026 season marks a full return to in-person testing. Test seats are equivalent to competition eligibility—no make-up tests, no extensions. Core test centers in popular cities are already "hard to come by." Planning ahead and securing your test seat early is just as important as systematic preparation.

IV. How Should Students in Different Grades Prepare Scientifically for AMC10?

Grade 7: Build a Solid Competition Foundation

Having just entered middle school, jumping directly into AMC10 can be quite challenging. It is recommended to first build a foundation through Pre-AMC10 courses, complete the junior high school math knowledge, and then gradually engage with AMC10 content. For 7th graders, it is advisable to allow 1–1.5 years of preparation time and not rush for quick results.

Grade 8: A Critical Transition Period

8th grade is a watershed moment. If school math performance is excellent, students can directly enter an AMC10 foundation class; if the foundation is average, it is recommended to start with a Pre-AMC10 bridging course. 8th graders should plan for 8–12 months of systematic preparation for the 2027 AMC10, leaving ample time for knowledge digestion and practice drills.

Grades 9–10: The Golden Sprint Period

This is the last chance to participate in AMC10—students must give it their all! It is recommended to directly enter an AMC10 intensive sprint class, focusing on breaking through weak modules with targeted practice, and engaging in intensive drills and mock exams before the test, aiming for the top 5% or even the top 1%. Every point gained could be the difference between qualifying for AIME and standing out in college applications.

The drums of the 2026 season have already sounded. Every day of summer is an irreplaceable preparation resource. Instead of worrying about "whether my child can make it," it's better to make a plan now, secure a test seat, and start systematic learning.
